Cures for Hot Mix Asphalt
AASHTO Segregation Causes and Cures for Hot Mix Asphalt 1st Edition
Historically, segregation has been measured on a subjective basis with state inspectors’ determination based on visual information only. This is difficult because, particularly on surface mix, problems due to segregation may not appear for several months.

Visual observation can identify only surface segregation, leaving that below the surface undetected.

This AASHTO Segregation Causes and Cures for Hot Mix Asphalt report, jointly published by AASHTO and the National Asphalt Pavement Association, addresses segregation and how it can be eliminated to ensure the production of high-quality paving mixtures.

AASHTO A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highway

AASHTO A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highway
AASHTO A Manual Analysis Highway
A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highways 3rd Edition.
This manual provide a valuable resource for people who analyze the benefits and costs of highway projects. These analysts have the difficult and often cumbersome responsibility of performing complex benefit-cost calculations and presenting the results to decision-makers, the media, and the public.

It has been the practice of AASHTO to publish materials to support transportation planners in state, regional, and local governments who evaluate highway investments. This AASHTO A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highway is the merger of two, related research efforts that should simplify the efforts of these planners.

This AASHTO A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highway document up dates and expand s the American Association of  State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) User Benefit Analysis for Highways, also known as the Red Book . This AASHTO A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highway publication helps state and local transportation planning authorities e valuate the economic benef its of   highway improvements . This update incorporates improvements in user benef it calculation methods and , for the f irst time,  provides g uidance for evaluating important non-user impacts of  highways .  Previous editions of  the Red Book prov ided guidance regarding user benef it measurement only.

Preface: Why Use This Manual AASHTO A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highway?
Transportation plan ners and policy makers are charged with the responsibility of identifying and selecting the projects that deserve implementation. Often, there are competing project designs toserve the same purpose.

The project selection process is complicated further, in most cases , by limited budgets and a host of candidate projects that might benef it the community. In these situations , analytic tools are needed to e valuate the relative merits of each cand idate proj ec t and ultimately provide a mean s for allocating resources to that set of projects that will maximize the total b enefits .

The purpose of this AASHTO A Manual of User Benefit Analysis for Highway is to assist in this process by providing the tools necessary to evaluate the costs and benef its related to transportation improvement projects

AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF

AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF
AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF
AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF is developed and maintained by the AASHTO Subcommittee on Design, Technical Committee for Roadside Safety. The guide presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units—metric and U.S. Customary units.

The 2006 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF supersedes the 1996 AASHTO publication of the same name and includes an update to Chapter 6, “Median Barriers,” which replaces Chapter 6 of the 2002 edition. In this guide, the roadside is defined as that area beyond the traveled way (driving lanes) and the shoulder (if any) of the roadway it self AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF

Consequently, roadside delineation, shoulder surface treatments, and similar on- roadway safety features are not extensively discussed. While it is a readily accepted fact that safety can best be served by keeping motorists on the road, the focus of the guide is on safety treatments that minimize the likelihood of serious injuries when a driver runs off the road. A second noteworthy point is that this document is a guide.

It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF
It is intended for use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. While much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, there are several recommendations that are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis.

To be consistent with AASHTO’s A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, design speed is as the basic speed parameter to be used in this guide. However, since the design speed is often selected based on the most restrictive physical features found on a specific project, there may be a significant percent- age of a project length where that speed will be exceeded by a reasonable and prudent driver. Conversely, there will be other instances where roadway conditions will prevent most motorists from driving as fast as the design speed.

AASHTO Roadside Design Guide PDF, The metric values are those that would have been used had the guide been presented exclusively in metric units; the U.S. Customary values are those that would have been used if the guide had been presented exclusively in U.S. Customary units. Therefore, the user is advised to work entirely in one system and not to attempt to convert directly between the two. The reader is cautioned that roadside safety is a rapidly changing field of study, and changes in policy, criteria, and technology are certain to occur after this document is published.

AASHTO A Transportation Executive Guide to Organizational Improvement

AASHTO A Transportation Executive Guide
AASHTO A Transportation Executive Guide
The intent of this guide AASHTO A Transportation Executive Guide to Organizational Improvement is to assist departments of transportation (DOTs) in identifying and pursuing opportunities for enhancing organizational performance.

The research involved asking DOTs, via written surveys and site visits to selected agencies, to describe their organizational improvement programs and practices and to assess the impact of these methods on performance.

AASHTO A Transportation Executive Guide to Organizational Improvement
The information gathered serves to document many specific “best practices” so that any DOT’s desire to benchmark particular areas of interest can be expedited. The most important purpose of this research, however, is to provide a guide for CEOs and senior leaders to improve organizational performance. To achieve this purpose we searched for common themes among the DOTs that reported the greatest strengths in their approaches to improvement.

Much of this guide AASHTO A Transportation Executive Guide to Organizational Improvement is devoted to describing the commonalities that were discovered so that other DOTs can know not only what the characteristics of the best practices are, but also how the agencies approached the challenges of putting those practices in place
